Entry No. 3: A Wicked Way to Celebrate

Hello Darling,

On June 8th, 2025, we celebrated my younger sister Pam’s birthday with an early dinner at Cava—a restaurant just near Southington, Connecticut that’s more like a theatrical experience than a typical meal. And I don’t say that lightly.

The entire place is themed after Wicked, and they truly went all in. From the moment we walked in, it felt like we’d stepped backstage into a Broadway set—or better yet, right into Oz. Every corner was dripping in drama and detail, and I honestly found myself spinning around just trying to take it all in.

We were seated in the Wizard’s Ballroom, and oh my goodness… emerald green draped ceilings, striking chandeliers, and a massive metallic Wizard head looming above like some enchanted guardian. It was dark and moody in the most glamorous way.

But what struck me most was the care they put into every room—not just the themed ones. Even the areas that didn’t have a specific character focus still felt elegant and immersive, like stepping into a high-society art deco ballroom. Glinda’s room was soft and dreamy, and the hallway styled like a vintage train car—with antique luggage and TV screens disguised as windows playing countryside views—made me pause and smile. It was storytelling through design, and you know how much I live for that.

The food? Also worth mentioning. For my gluten-free girls, they offer gluten-free pasta in all their dishes, which is such a gift. I had the penne alla vodka with grilled chicken—simple, familiar, and delicious. We added two orders of garlic bread for the table (six pieces each), and they didn’t stand a chance. Gone in minutes.

After our meal, we took a little walk around to explore more of the restaurant (your table time is limited to two hours—it’s that popular). And while we didn’t make it up to the rooftop this time, they do have an Alice in Wonderland section up there that I’ve heard is just as detailed and dreamy as everything else. If—no, when—I go back, I already know I’ll be wearing my pale blue Swiss tulle tea-length dress. I call her The Teacup Dress. She’s very Alice. Very me.

Honestly, it reminded me of Disneyland. That same feeling of being inside a world that was imagined with intention and wonder. I didn’t get to take as many photos as I wanted—my phone was barely hanging on—but I left inspired. My mind is already sketching.

If you’re ever near Southington, Connecticut—or if you just love a little magic with your meal—it’s absolutely worth the trip. I even overheard someone say they drove in from Boston just to experience it. And Darling? I completely understand.

Did you see the movie Wicked? Are you excited for part two? Whose costumes did you love best?

Until next time,

Dani Simone, The Dressmaker
