Entry No. 9: Eight Vintage Beauties… and the One I’m Hoping Will Join My Collection
Hello, Darling!
Quick update - I may have become obsessed.
In the last 72 hours, I have purchased eight vintage Barbies… and I have my eye on one more. This last one? She’s very important. Her name is Midge.
This particular Midge was released in 1998, which feels impressive enough to note—especially since my new collection spans quite a range. The oldest is from 1976, with others from 1992, 1994, 1999, 2001… and, honestly, I’ve bought so many now that the years are starting to blur together.
I’ve managed to find a good number of African American dolls, and nearly all of them are wearing wedding gowns or special occasion dresses. Some will stay in those dresses forever—like a time capsule of their original charm. Others will trade their current attire for something entirely new, just like my “Avon representative” doll.
Her name may be plain on the box, but her future is anything but. She’ll eventually wear a gown stitched from scraps of silk, lace, or beading that never quite found a place in my full-sized bridal creations. Her short, natural Afro will receive a few quiet touches—pearls, blossoms, or a romantic embellishment that turns it into a tiny work of art.
I’ll share photos of a few dolls soon (yes, including the representative), but for now, I’m keeping Midge’s fate just between us. Will I win her? Well… you’ll have to keep reading.
Ta-ta for now.
