When I was in fashion design school, I “went natural” and stood in a wedding wearing my signature afro. The bride asked if I was going to “do my hair”—a quiet message that my natural beauty didn’t fit her idea of special-occasion elegance. I straightened it, but the question stayed with me: Why wasn’t our hair, as it is, worthy of our most meaningful moments?

In 2024, while producing my collection The Gilded Garden, I decided it was time to change that narrative. I designed the gowns and styled my Muses’ hair myself—drawing on a longtime, often unseen talent. For that shoot, I created my first AfroCouture™️ wig, followed by sixteen more for my New York Fashion Week show that September.

My models loved them. One told me she saw herself differently by embracing her natural beauty. Another shared that she felt seen—that Black women were being shown our hair is luxury.

This work is deeply personal. Afro hair is couture. It is beauty and confidence, and I am proud to adorn your crown.
